Dynamics GP vs. Business Central: What do business decision-makers think of Microsoft’s two ERP systems?

What do small and medium-sized businesses and organizations think of GP? Is Business Central on their radar?

Joesoftware talked with some of our current customers about GP, Business Central, and how they are managing important decisions about their ERP system. We want to share what we learned as we think it’s good intelligence and feedback as you think about your own ERP system and plan.

Living with some Dynamics GP Pain?

While most businesses agree GP is a solid solution, they admit using GP for your ERP system comes with some challenges. Most organizations using GP cite pain points or deficiencies with how their current system is configured. These challenges lead to the question: do we live with the pain and avoid additional costs, or seek guidance and input on how to fix these challenges with third-party add-ons or expert advice and fixes managed by Joesoftware, or do we make the transition to Business Central?

Dynamics GP rumour in town…

Many businesses have heard rumours that Microsoft is getting out of Dynamics GP. This rumour is not true. Microsoft recently reconfirmed its commitment to GP through 2028. The introduction of Microsoft’s new cloud-based ERP system, Business Central, is likely the reason behind the talk. For now, and for the next number of years, organizations will have two Microsoft options for their ERP system.

Heard of Dynamics 365 Business Central?

If your answer to that question is “no”, you aren’t alone. Some decision-makers are aware of Business Central, while others are not. Even for those who have heard of Business Central, they admit they know very little about Microsoft’s cloud-based ERP system. Many make the assumption that if it is “new”, it might be better, but have no facts or information to back that up. Interestingly, most businesses admit that they don’t have the time to research new ERP solutions and recognize a new ERP system is a time and financial investment.

Analyze Dynamics GP vs. Business Central

Even if Business Central is not on your short- or medium-term horizon, most businesses admit they need to learn more about it so it can be considered in their future planning. An analysis or strategic assessment of the opportunities and challenges of upgrading GP or transitioning from a GP environment to Business Central is the best next step. This is a service Joesoftware provides to both existing and new clients.

The transition to Business Central is a commitment. It is more than a migration strategy. It is the installation of a brand-new ERP system. These kinds of decisions need to be thoughtful ones so it’s important to do your homework first.

Compare Costs

It is generally understood that implementing a new ERP comes with significant costs. As such, Business Central sometimes isn’t given fair consideration because businesses don’t want to expend the time and resources to facilitate a change. However, it is important to compare the costs GP customers face with upgrades and customizations vs the costs to transition to Business Central. Again, completing an analysis or assessment can give you a clear picture of the costs and pros and cons of both options so you can determine the right path for your business.

Joesoftware can help you assess and weigh your options and help your team plan for the future. We’re ready to talk and learn more about where you are today, and where you want your organization to be in the years ahead.
